Madeira for the Long Weekend

On Monday we went up a cliff on the gondala then came down the cliff on a taboggan that was pulled/pushed by two guys - it was heaps of fun, we even brought the photo they took - an action shot! Photos from Funchal

Photos from Day 1
This weekend was a long weekend so me, Josh, Louise, Teresa (Lou's sister), Mike and Louise T all went to Madeira together. We hired a car/van/bus - the roads where really narrow and steep with huge cliff faces on the side - so it felt like a bus most of the time! Mike drove us around Madeira and we visited all the sights. We left home at 4am for our plane on Saturday morning. We arrived back Tuesday morning at 1.30am - a few hours sleep then off to work. Madeira is an island off Portugal. We flew into the main city then headed out west and drove the whole west coast and spent the night in a beautiful little town. In the morning we drove along the north coast and back around to the city. We spent the next night in the city Funchal, where we did our sightseeing on the Monday. The beaches where all pebble and black sand, and lots of the beach areas had rock/bathing pools created in front of them for sunbathing and swimming - you will see in the photos. Madeira was formed through volcanic eruption and came out of the sea, you can see it in the terrain, it is so very hilly! But absolutely beautiful. The gardens and houses are built into the cliffs. They grow grapes and bananas - that and tourism are their main sources of income.
