Day 4 San Fransisco: Saturday 22nd January 2011

Jo's Crab Shack and The Crab Dancing Cocktails Lombard Street The Tram
Today was our last day so we took the famous cable car tram up past union square to the Westfield where in true Jones style we did a little shopping. We walked back down through Chinatown to catch the F train back to the hotel but because of the march it wasn’t running! Anyway we caught a cab and drove back past Lombard Street – check out the winding street – apparently it’s illegal to park the car vertically on the street because they have had too many accidents with ‘run away’ cars! We had lunch at Joe’s crab shack where we shared cocktails – served in jars and we shared our last crab! Every 40 min the staff get together and dance – everybody is encouraged to join in – there where a few takers – it was quite entertaining. At 2pm we headed back to the hotel and off to the airport (where I am writing this now). We leave at 5.50pm and get back into London midday on Sunday – the unfortunately back to work on Monday.

We started the day at a diner that looked out over the water and had a MASSIVE breakfast to start the day. We walked down and took the 10am boat to Alcatraz where we spent the next few hours walking around the island. Watching a video introduction and doing a guided tour of the cellblock. We learn’t all about the daily life, routine, famous people who were prisoned – Al Capone and the ‘bird man’. Of the 39 escape attempts they say that no one made it, however, there are 3 people that dug out of the back of their cells, went up the utility shaft to the roof and never to be seen again so who knows! We came back and had a nice clam chowder again in the sunshine, and wandered along the waterfront again. The weather has been absolutely amazing for us. We enjoyed the happy hour in the hotel (again) before heading out at 6pm for our last bus tour - the night one - it went for 90 minutes.

San Fransisco Day 2: Thursday 20th January

More Victorian houses in SF. City Hall
Painted Laddies - they are called this because they are victorian houses and are all painted in more than 3 colours. These are the most famous ones in California. It is illegal to destroy a victorian house and to not keep it up to scratch, if you dont't the city will reposses your house - a good reason to spend the weekend painting and on renno's!
The one used for Full House.
These are re-used bricks from the 1906 SF fire.
Josh in Union Square Powell St.
Grafetti artist from NY brought in to reduce crime! We are told it didn't work.

Tram
Little Italy The church. Filmed x men here - because the building looks like it has 'x' all over it. Golden Gate Bridge We started today with what felt like an early start. We had a nice fruit and muffin for breakfast from room service before buying a city sightseeing bus ticket for all the tours. We started our first tour at 10am and went over the Golden Gate Bridge and visited the little town of Sausalito (a little fishing village). Although it was lovely and sunny and 16 degrees, it was windy and cold on the bus. The tour took about an hour and a half and we headed then for the city loop and took lunch in a diner in union square, sized up what we wanted to buy from the shopping and then went on the Golden Gate Park loop, where we visited not only the golden gate park but also the famous Alamo Square and saw the Painted Laddies. The yellow house in the middle is where Full House was filmed. The houses go for about $4 million. We saw the famous stage where all the famous musicians have once played, I was told lots of names but all I can remember is Tupac! We saw the church of Coltrane where the pastor plays the trumpet in the middle of the sermon and people are encouraged to bring their own instruments. It is actually the church of Johnny Coltrane. Once again we enjoyed the happy hour before heading out for yet another seafood dinner! n

Today we left NZ and said goodbye to everyone at 7.30pm - so nice to see everyone and Marz's wedding was amazing! We arrived in San Fransisco at 11am and caught a taxi to our hotel the Argonaut - it has a nautical theme. We enjoyed a nice shower before heading out and taking a walk around Fisherman's Wharf. We went to Pier 39 and saw the seals and had clam chowder and prawns on the pier! Josh ordered a beer that came wrapped in brown paper bag - just like a homeless alcoholic - love it! We had a nice dinner at a local seafood restaurant and enjoyed halibut cheeks, oysters, clams and crabs to celebrate a belated 8th wedding anniversary. Oh and I should not forget to mention that we started the evening with the free wine happy hour that occurs in the hotel each evening - we will enjoy all of them!
