Today we did a REALLY LONG day touring the city. We started with at 10am viewing of the Uffizi where we saw a LOT of art!!!! We saw all the art we could see most of it on wood panels – really amazing, art by Falippo Lippo, Botollici. Actually ‘The Birth of Venus’ was really amazing! The Uffizi actually doesn’t hold any completed art by Leonardo da Vinci but we did see some half completed arts. We also saw the painting ‘Holy Family’ by Michelangelo. After we finished at Uffizi we headed off to Ponte Vecchio – a very pretty bridge and the only bridge not mined by the retreating Nazis in the 1944. After this we went to San Lorenzo square for some lunch and went into the San Lornezo Cathedral where we saw two striking bronze pulpits by Donatello. Then we went around to the Capelle Medicee where we saw the last image of the Madonna that Michelangelo every sculpted. We then moved on to Santa Croce where we saw Vasari’s monument to Michelangelo whose body was brought back to Florence in 1574. Also here was the tomb of Galileo, Ghiberti, and a monument to Dante and a cenotaph to Dante. By this time it was about time we headed up to the Accademia for our booking to see David. We even took a sneaky photo! After all this excitement, we headed back to the hotel for a rest before going out to dinner. Tonight in Florence was a music festival so in all the different areas where stages and music – very exciting and so many crowds. The highlight of the evening was the 3 year old child we say dancing to the music and as he went to break dance on his head, his parent s quickly picked him off the concrete! A very full on day!
