An early start today, we where up at 5am and leaving a t 5.30 for the airport where we flew from Cape Town to Johannesburg, then on to Hoedsprit, where a driver picked us up and took us to the game reserve. We are staying at a private game reserve next door to Kruger called Timbivarti, all the game reserves are open and the animals walk through. On the way to the reserve we saw a giraffe, water buffalo and an elephant. We are staying at GomoGomo, in this most amazing tent. It is canvas but with a wooden floor and a concrete building attached with a plumbed bathroom. It is right at the end of the camp and the lions sleep next to us! There is no fence around the camp so the animals are free to roam and in front of us is a watering hole so we get lots of customers. We had a nice chicken salad for lunch then from 4 – 7.30pm we went on our first game drive. During the five we stopped for ‘sundowners’ – at sunset we stopped and got off the truck and had a glass of wine and some snack. The safari is done on a land rover with no back to it and 3 rows of bench seating. The highlight of the dive was the money and baby leopard we say – Rockfig and Rockfig Mapipan. Absolutely amazing, we drove right up to them and stopped the vehicle and 1 meter from them. We also saw rhino, elephants, waterbok, tree squirrels, a jackal, impala and some birds. We where walked back to our tent by the ranger and told we would be picked up at 8pm for dinner, no leaving without him as animals are on the move at night time and no fences! Last night the lions where strolling through the camp! Dinner was served outside around an open fire and was real, beef, mash, carrots and beans. We went to bed about 11pm with only a fan and sheet as it has been 32 degrees all day with high humidity.
