Day 5: Tuesday 26th November

Cigar and Port Wine tasting Our room Mont Rochelle Horse Riding
We where obviously really tired as we slept for 10.5 hours last night and woke up – thankfully at 9.30am just in time for breakfast. It was served in the garden under umbrellas; we had beautiful fruit, eggs and bacon. Just after 11am we left Stellenbosch for Franschook (also in the wine district). The scenery was so beautiful in between with all the mountains, fields and vineyards. We checked in at Mont Rochelle, had a complementary glass of wine and a walk around the grounds (it’s a working winery) before heading down for our 4.5 hour horse ride. The ride was fantastic, there where 6 of us and we stopped at 2 wineries for tasting (one of which was Mont Rochelle). The horses where all part of one family and where all pure breed Arabians and liked to ride in order, not side by side. Josh kept causing trouble by bringing his horse by the side of another causing it to trot out of the way. We had heaps of opportunities to trot and canter thought the vineyards and countryside. It was beautiful – and boiling hot! 28 degrees in the sun with jeans on meant we couldn’t wait to go inside the winery and cool down. By 6pm are behinds where quite sore and we where more than happy to return to the stables. I had a bath and Josh went for a run before we went for dinner at Mont Rochelle. The chef had worked at Michelin star restaurants and the food was divine. Since it did include such things as truffles and foie gras, I did make sure I selected dishes that didn’t present too much of an ethical dilemma. However, I did eat Kudu as a started (game animal), Josh assured me that this is a very common animal to eat. I stuck with chicken and Josh had lamb for mains. Exquisite food! We headed to lounge after dinner and enjoyed a cigar and port and practiced our Xhosa (Africa dialect).
